Looking back now, I can see how God kept fighting for me against all odds.
When I got a place for my secondary school, I didn’t manage to go for registration with my grade 7 results due to financial constraints. These grade 7 results are what was used for screening and apportioning “form one class.”
I tried negotiating with the school teachers as I knew my points, but they placed me in the lowest class without proof. The class was disadvantaged by its general noisy behaviour that had cemented a negative attitude by the teachers.
Form one is fundamental to academic performance, and I found myself in a classroom where teachers were not even motivated to teach fully. By the grace of the Almighty, all three form-one classes were assigned the same Integrated science teacher; she recognised my potential and started lobbying that I would be reconsidered and placed in a better class; this was to no avail. The head of the department said if I were good enough, I would still perform despite the disadvantages.
The science teacher started encouraging me not to settle, and to do my best technically. I began competing with people in the A-class ( only years later was I told that she would brag about my test scores to the A students). As a tradition, the school held a book price test where the top five students per subject got a prize. I always managed to get awards in subjects each cycle. Still, this wasn’t enough for me to be changed, classes. In form two, after God continuously enabled me to keep getting high scores in the stream, they moved another student and me into class B.
Never had such been done in the history of the school. We tarried with the grace of God, and he allowed us both to get into the A-class in form three. I thank you, Lord, for sending me helpers; you didn’t let me walk alone.
