When we have God, we have everything. Of course, I am saying this from a highly privileged standpoint. I have working control of both my arms and both my legs. I have everyone in my immediate family alive and well. But, when someone who looks like they have nothing, live like they have everything, it makes the whole “when we have God, we have everything” really true.
I was a quadriplegic and was confined to a life on the bed/wheelchair. With absolutely no control over his arms and my legs, Despite being completely bedridden and needing complete support for even the simplest of tasks, I could sense the Holy Spirit within me.
As a young adult, I had gone to Australia to study in a theological seminary. I was passionate about the Lord and “felt very drawn to truly understanding the Bible”. However, in my mid-thirties, I was struck by a vehicle as I was cycling on the road. Consequently, I began to live a life of a quadriplegic (paralyzed from the neck down).
I remember the day vividly when I initiated a conversation about the Bible. As I shared the insights I had gathered over the years, I requested my visitor to slide the table tray across my bed. With a twist of my neck, I seized a rubber pen with my teeth from the table and began nodding my head, attempting to activate my favourite Bible App on the touch tablet propped up by the books behind it.
It was a challenge that took me nearly half a minute to overcome, but finally, the app opened. The sheer joy that emanated from within me, devoid of any trace of resentment or dissatisfaction, seemed to instil a profound sense of hope in my visitor’s heart. My fervour for my beliefs, as I eagerly started to recount the lessons from my seminary school days, was unmistakable. It was evident to my visitor, and now it’s clear to me too, that my deepest desire has always been to share the word of God and the hope found in Jesus with everyone I encounter.
